() has introduced a rationing system for popular items to avoid customers stockpiling.

The move follows ’s () announcement on Thursday on capping purchases of products such as toilet papers to three per person.

Fellow ‘Big Four’ Tesco applied the same limit to flour, dried pasta, toilet roll, baby wipes and anti-bacterial wipes.

Supermarkets are looking to prevent panic-buying which brought to shortages at the beginning of the pandemic.

Earlier this week, UK’s chief executive Giles Hurley reassured customers there is no need to stockpile, while Tesco’s boss Dave Lewis stressed there is no disruption on supply chains.

Shares in Tesco dipped 1% to 216.8p on Friday afternoon.
