Johnson Matthey PLC and Plug Power Inc plan to develop better performing hydrogen

The pair aim to build a system that is more durable, better performing and more energy efficient than systems available today

() looked to strengthened its hydrogen aspirations by striking a deal with US pure-play electrolyser specialist Inc ().

Under the agreement, the pair plan to jointly develop high-performance electrolysation technology, using the FTSE 100 company’s materials expertise in ‘s electrolyser systems.

With JM already a specialist in recycling platinum group metals (PGMs), the two companies also said they will investigate the development of a closed-loop recycling system for the critical PGMs used as catalysts in these systems.

The pair said the aim is to build a system that is more durable, performs better and is more energy efficient than systems available today.

“Johnson Matthey and Plug Power believe strongly in building the hydrogen economy and have a wealth of experience across a broad spectrum of the hydrogen economy value chain,” they said in a statement.

Plug Power claims to be the world’s largest user of liquid hydrogen and already has plans to produce 500 tons (453 tonnes) of capacity daily in the US by 2025 and 1,000 tons globally by 2028.

Plug Power’s operations boss, Rick Mason, said the collaboration was important as the new generation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers “will require solutions that are able to meet the increasing demands on efficiency and performance”.

Eugene McKenna, managing director of JM’s green hydrogen business, said Plug Power’s innovative electrolyser technology and knowledge and market position “make them an ideal partner”.
