Pubs might be forced to put calorie information on beer taps (don’t tell Tim

What next? Calorie information on the outside of ice cream vans? How many calories are there in a 99, anyway? More than 99, I bet.

When pub patrons belly-up to the bar in future they may be able to look at the number of calories each pint on offer contains.

The Department for Health and Social Care, as part of its Obesity Strategy, is planning to launch a consultation on mandatory calorie labelling on alcohol in the UK.

London’s Evening Standard newspaper reported that the requirement if it becomes law, would only apply to businesses with 250 or more employees, so your local free house would be exempt from the requirement.

Nevertheless, the British Beer & Pub Association is not happy about the development, calling the proposals “ludicrous”.

“Now is not the time to heap burdensome and expensive regulation on our pubs,” said Emma McClarkin, the chief executive of the trade association.

“Our pubs are on their knees and the Government already knows this. Calorie labelling would be kicking pubs and brewers when they are down.

“We have very serious concerns on the impact these proposals would have on the sector and on consumers,” she added.

A government spokesman confirmed no decisions have yet been taken on the issue.
