IRS child tax credit monthly check: New timeline for $3,600 payments

Have you checked to see if you qualify for the expanded child tax credit? Part of it depends on your income, while another factor relies on your dependents’ eligibility. If all requirements are met, you can expect to start receiving part of your payments in July on a monthly basis, per the IRS, and the other half with your 2021 tax refund next year. 

Those who qualify will receive between $3,000 and $3,600 per dependent (more details below). Newborns with 2021 birthdays will also count towards the child tax credit money. The IRS will likely release more information about the CTC payments in the coming months, but we can tell you some of the important details, like how much you personally could receive.

Is there an official date for when the first child tax credit payment will arrive?

We know the child tax credit payments will begin arriving in July, but a specific date hasn’t been announced. The IRS will make additional information about the expanded child tax credit available “as soon as possible,” the agency said in a statement March 12. See our chart below for the timeline.
