Police, YMCA, Food Bank make sure students get lunch on spring break

BELVIDERE (WREX) — Spring break is underway for students in Belvidere, Belvidere nonprofits and the city make sure they have lunch while they’re away.

The YMCA, Belvidere Police, City of Belvidere and Northern Illinois Food Bank all teamed up to hand out more than 1,200 boxed lunches to any kid under 18 on Monday.

Cars lined up outside of General Mills Park to get the free meals that they have relied on during the pandemic.

“We really appreciate it,” said one parent. “We’re having a really bad situation right now. With this, it means a lot for families in the community.”

“It’s a sad thing for the fact the people need so much food, but it’s a good thing that we can help fill that need,” said Jen Jacky, Belvidere Family YMCA CEO.

Belvidere students return to school on April 6.
