Until relatively recently, many popular budgeting apps offered limited functionality in Ireland. They could not sync with Irish bank accounts, meaning users had to enter incomings and outgoings manually, making the apps not much better than a spreadsheet.
Open banking — whereby financial institutions are obliged to share account details with third parties, if requested to do so by their customers — is finally trickling down to Irish consumers.
Many apps will now, if given permission, access your bank and credit card accounts and present a real-time snapshot of where your money is going, and how far you have eaten into a particular budget.
