UK Oil & Gas PLC says High Court upholds injunction against Extinction Rebellion

The injunction is “a reasonable and proportionate restriction on protesters’ activities”, the oiler said

() announced that the High Court has upheld its injunction against protest at the Horse Hill site near Gatwick Airport.

The judge found that there was a sufficiently real and imminent risk to justify the interim injunction order and its revised scope, which prohibits trespass to the site’s land, obstruction of the main entrance and lorry surfing.

The injunction is “a reasonable and proportionate restriction on protesters’ activities”, while the order “does not prevent slow walking or simply standing outside the site” as long as this does not physically obstruct anybody entering or leaving the site, the oiler added.

The judge also found that the injunction should be extended to include six named protesters associated with environmental movement Extinction Rebellion.

The injunction remains in force until a final two-day trial, to be scheduled between June and October 2021.

Last October, two men were accused of aggravated trespass after entering the site to hang a banner on a rig that read “No More Oil”.

Extinction Rebellion has held demonstrations against oil drilling at the Horse Hill site, of which UKOG owns 85.635%, for years as they deem it “not acceptable” amid the current climate emergency.
